Diary of a film  /

Niven Govinden.London: Dialogue Books, 2021 - 212 p.
uitgave: London: Dialogue Books, 2021 - 212 p.

samenvatting: "An auteur, together with his lead actors, is at a prestigious European festival to premiere his latest film. Alone one morning at a backstreet cafe, he strikes up a conversation with a local woman who takes him on a walk to uncover the city's secrets, historic and personal. As the walk unwinds, a story of love and tragedy emerges, and he begins to see the chance meeting as fate. He is entranced, wholly clear in his mind: her story must surely form the basis for his next film. This is a novel about cinema, flaneurs, and queer love - it is about the sometimes troubled, sometimes ecstatic creative process, and the toll it takes on its makers. But it is also a novel about stories, and the ongoing question of who has the right to tell them."

uitgave: Utrecht: Blossom Books, 2021 - 152 p.: ill
onderwerpen:

"Queer as hell media" : Affirming LGBTQ+ youth identity and building community in Metro Atlanta, Georgia  / Cameron Greensmith & Bo King.

Journal of LGBT Youth, 19 (2022) 2 (apr-jun), p. 180-197
bron: Journal of LGBT Youth jaargang: 19 (2022) 2 (apr-jun), p. 180-197
samenvatting: Within the United States, the American South holds the largest number of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ+) people, which totals to 3.8 million (LGBTQ in 2016). Metro Atlanta is uniquely situated within the South's geography; the City of Atlanta is hailed as a queer mecca while the suburbs and surrounding rural areas are assumed to reproduce and reinforce racist, conservative, and religious ideologies. A total of 12 qualitative interviews with LGBTQ+ youth (ages 18-26) at Kennesaw State University offer a more nuanced understanding of being LGBTQ+ in the South by shedding light on the ways they thrive, form relationships, and seek out knowledge regarding LGBTQ+ identity and experience. Findings highlight that LGBTQ+ youth utilize all forms of media to affirm their identities, create like-minded communities, and take up space as a "fuck you" to the imagined cisheteronormativity in Georgia. The article centers the voices and critiques of LGBTQ+ young people as they negotiate competing discourses of queer acceptability and inclusivity, turning to new media platforms as spaces where they can find safety, as well as curate themselves and their experiences.

Pink Networks : An exploratory study of queer older adults' use of queer joy, practical kinship, and care relationships to do relatedness in the Dutch context  / Lara Fizaine.

samenvatting: In this thesis, I argue that queer older adults in the Dutch context do relatedness through queer joy, practical kinship, and care relationships, in which: a) Relatedness is meant to include "literally any kind of relation between persons" (Stafford, 2000, p. 37) and is based on metaphorical con-substantiality, or the idea that flows between people of things that are not actual substances but possess animating properties and are linked to strong emotions, that has the power to build a connection between people (Carsten, 2011). b) Queer joy is the kind of bittersweet joy that one, as a queer person, might feel when they realize that although they are not living in their ideal reality, they have the power to imagine, play with and occasionally get a taste of this ideal reality (Muñoz, 2019; Royster, 2021); but also a doing - the act of creating a temporary, utopian space together - with the power of creating fluid and mutable networks of relatedness. c) Practical kinship is kinship seldom based on norms, hinging instead on the choice to maintain it through kin work (Yan, 2020), which I argue is what enables my participants to not be alone even when they have little in ways of normative kinship. d) Care relationships are what allow queer older adults to confirm, undo, create, and strengthen ties with kin of all kinds, and are mostly focused on experiencing the need for care in groups, leading to the formation of care networks akin to therapy networks (Krause, 2008).

Queering Kinship: Reimagination of Happily Ever After  / Chih-Ning Ho.

samenvatting: Are we doomed to die alone if we cannot find love? Can we seek comfort in knowing there are alternatives outside of heteronormative pair-bonding on the other side of the rainbow? To investigate how people imagine themselves existing outside of conventional family formation norms, I invited nonbinary people in Taiwan to join this research and explore the research question: "How does the gender nonconformity of nonbinary people in Taiwan influence their understanding of kinship?" To channel the power of existing in liminal spaces and borderlands, I collected ten nonbinary people's autobiographies and interviewed them about their experiences of gender, relationships, family, and kinship. Through the analysis of the data collected, I showed how gender plays a role in nonbinary people's socialization in a Taiwanese context. There are various mechanisms governing people's gender expression, for example, expectation from one's partners, parents, or internalized gender norms as a result of one's gendered upbringing. Taiwanese society is built upon these binary gender ideologies, and even nonbinary people cannot fully escape. Not being able to completely fit into the categories of men or women, nonbinary people may feel left out in the dating world. On top of feelings of frustration and desperation, participants started to critically reflect on the centralization of romantic relationships. Derived from their lived experiences or receiving love and support from non-romantic relationships, participants critically questioned why these relationships are seen as less legitimate than romantic relationships. Why is it that, according to current marriage law in Taiwan, only long term, monogamous, and amorous relationships are entitled to family status?

#Supercorp kissed - or did they? : lesbian fandom and queerbaiting  / Johanna Church.

Journal of Lesbian Studies, 27 (2023) 2 (apr-jun), p. 213-229
bron: Journal of Lesbian Studies jaargang: 27 (2023) 2 (apr-jun), p. 213-229
samenvatting: The Supercorp fandom refers to the platonic friendship between Kara Danvers, aka Supergirl, and her friend Lena Luthor. The term "Supercorp" refers to an implied - yet unexplored - queer relationship created by fans of the DC/CW show Supergirl. Imagined relationships, referred to by fandoms (groups of fans) as 'shipping, tackle the unexplored chemistry between two characters who are not romantically linked. Supergirl's screenwriters were notorious for placing Kara and Lena in heteronormative relationship scenarios, effectively queerbaiting (or covert courting) the audience by suggesting a romantic relationship never explored on-screen. On November 11, 2021, fans had fun by doctoring photos of the series finale and "showing" Kara and Lena kissing. Fans created an alternate reality where two women publicly expressed their love. Deprived of a queer "happy ending", Supergirl fans gaslit the DC fandom (and beyond), leading many to question the reality of their initial viewing experience. The fans were gaslighting the world into questioning whether the footage was authentic. The fandom rallied in solidarity by crafting the "reality" they wanted. Using a lens informed by psychoanalytic theory and fan studies research, this paper examines how the Supercorp fandom used the liminal space of broadcast time zones to reclaim a queer narrative which they were denied. This paper contributes to the advancement of lesbian studies by shining a light on the efforts of a marginalized segment of fandom and examining the trauma caused by queer coding - and queerbaiting - in service to a heteronormative agenda.
